Harold Miller Obituary

The Rev. Harold E. Miller, 87, of Larryville, went to be with the Lord, on Sunday, January 6, 2019.


Born March 26, 1931 in Williamsport, he was a son of Ralph S. and Julia M. (Cline) Miller and his foster parents were Watson and Martha (Mahaffey) Waltz.


Harold married Patricia Ann Ryder on May 19, 1956 at the Newberry United Methodist Church. They were married 52 years before her passing on January 17, 2009.


Harold graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1950. Upon graduation he worked for Piper in Lock Haven. He entered the U.S. Navy out of Baltimore, MD in 1951. He was based in San Diego, CA, as a submarine repairman on the USS Sp, Metal Smith Second Class. Harold was honorably discharged from the Navy and received a National Defense Service Medal in 1955.


In 1959 Harold enrolled at Lycoming College as a ministerial student. In 1961 he transferred to Mansfield Teaching College, and majored in English. He achieved his teaching certificate for English. In 1965 he earned his Ohio teaching certificate at age 34. He taught school part-time while serving as Pastor of State Road Methodist Church, Germantown, OH, and also attending Seminary School in Germantown, OH. In 1966 Harold earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree in Dayton Ohio, his Certificate of Ordination in 1966 in York, Pa., and his Master of Divinity Degree in 1972 from the United Theological Seminary.


Rev. Harold E. Miller served the following United Methodist charges, Liberty Circuit, 1958-1962; Ohio Miami Conference: State Road, Germantown, OH, 1962-1966; Warrensville Circuit, 1966-Sept. 1973; Pennsylvania Council on Alcohol Problems, Sept. 1973-1976; Lycoming Parish, 1976-Nov. 1, 1984; West Milton, Nov. 1, 1984-1993; he officially retired in 1993, during retirement served the Salladasburg; Brookside-Centennial, 1993-1995; and Centennial/White Pine, 1995-2001.


Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, oil painting, puzzles, cooking, baking, and was an avid reader. He was a member of Larryville United Methodist Church and enjoyed being part of the church's activities. His love and being with his family was his greatest joy in life. 


Surviving are four children, Keith Miller (Patricia), of Horseheads, NY, Kaylin Sanders, of Montgomery, Kevin Miller (Selena), of Muncy, Kyle Miller (Andrea), of Port Henry, NY; seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.


In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a great granddaughter Becca Brion.


A time of visitation will be held 12-1 p.m. Saturday, January 12 at Trinity United Methodist, 1407 Allegheny Street, Jersey Shore, with a service to honor Harold's life at 1 p.m.


Burial will be private in Jersey Shore Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harold's name may be made to the American Cancer Society 1948 East Third St. Williamsport, PA 17701.
