Steven Milton Koser, 69, passed away at his home in Newberry on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
Born May 29, 1956, “Koser” was the son of the late Orvis A. and Barbara J. (Schultz) Koser.
After graduating from high school, Steven became a registered nurse, eventually serving as an RN supervisor. In his medical work, Koser served his patients with intelligence, honesty, and humor. So too did he infuse all of his relationships with these qualities.
It is difficult to try to capture the spirit of a man who was so very real, so very present. Never one for small talk, empty pleasantries, or any of society’s rules, Koser was an original. He was fearlessly honest, stubborn, and raw, yet his heart was filled with sympathy and goodwill for others.
Perhaps what drew many to want to be his friend was his rare combination of intense individuality yet sensitivity to others. Koser’s dry humor and clever jokes could entertain a crowd, yet he could also spend days alone by a stream perfecting the art of fly fishing. An accomplished trout flymaker, he devoted endless time to this skill. Koser’s knowledge of and expertise in this craft were admired by all who knew him.
Koser knew the acute pain of losing a child. After fourteen years of enduring medical treatments, his beloved son, Jamen, passed away too soon. This loss may well have been the deepest source of his empathy for others and his rare courage in being true to himself.
Koser is survived by his nephew, Steven Smith, his great nephew, Ryder Smith, his brother-in-law, Stephen Smith, and his partner and friend, Barbara Bigelow.
In addition to his son and parents, Koser was predeceased by his sisters, Stephanie Smith, and Mattie Koser.
A time of visitation to honor Steven Koser’s life will be held at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond Street, Williamsport, PA from 2:00-2:30 on Tuesday, October 21.
