Richard A. “Rich” Heinlen, 82, of Williamsport, went home to be with his Savior and loved ones gone before him, on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at UPMC Williamsport.
Born March 16, 1942, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Florence (Fisher) Heinlen.
Rich was a 1960 graduate of Williamsport High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. His patriotism and commitment to excellence carried over into his civilian life, where he was employed for 40 years as the fleet maintenance manager for Montour Oil Service Company.
Rich was not just a man of work but also a man of faith and community. He was a long-standing member of the former Memorial Baptist Church, now Hillview Baptist, where he lifted his voice in song as a member of the choir and upheld the church's values as a trustee. His love for the outdoors was evident in his active involvement with the Laurel Lodge Hunting Club and the Lycoming Creek Anglers. Rich also made significant contributions to the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association and enjoyed the camaraderie and adventures with the Williamsport Cross Country Ski Club.
Beyond his community engagements, Rich was a passionate sports enthusiast. He bled the colors of Penn State Football, cheered fervently for the Philadelphia Phillies, and supported the local Williamsport Crosscutters with the same zeal. His love for sports was only matched by his love for travel. For many years, Rich delighted in exploring new destinations, with a particular fondness for ski trips that combined his sense of adventure with his love for the crisp winter air.
He was preceded in death by his late wife, Suzanne (Rhode) Heinlen, in 2015 who he adored for 26 years, leaving an indelible mark on his heart. Rich found love once again with his devoted current wife, Valerie (Houser) Heinlen, who stood by his side, sharing in the joys and sorrows.
Rich will be remembered as the embodiment of love, kindness, and friendliness. His role as a devoted husband, father, and cherished Grand Pop and Pop Pop was where he shone brightest. His ability to light up a room with his smile, his quick wit, and joyful laughter will be dearly missed.
In addition to his wife, Valerie (Houser) Heinlen, he is also survived by four children, Ruth E. Somers (Bill) of Schuylkill Haven, Stacy Gardner (David), of Williamsport, Lori L. Griffin (Jan), and Alicia M. Faulkner-Nixon all of Williamsport; nine grandchildren, Christine, Michael, Tiffany, Tyler, Andrea, Ryan, Jaden, Breanna and Tatum; two great grandchildren, Ella and Alex.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wife of 26 years, Suzanne Heinlen.
A funeral service to honor Rich will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25 at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., Williamsport, with his Pastor Robert Strobel officiating. Burial will follow at State Road Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at Sanders.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rich’s name to Lycoming Creek Anglers' Club, 2079 Blair St, Williamsport, PA 17701 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
