Leonard G. Schanbacher, 88, of Williamsport, died peacefully Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Williamsport Home. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Eva Schanbacher.
Born February 3, 1935 in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Charles and Windred (Sherman) Schanbacher.
Leonard was a 1953 graduate of Williamsport Area High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Lycoming College, and his master’s degree in education from Penn State University. Mr. Schanbacher taught many years in the Muncy School District and then taught in the Williamsport Area School District, where he retired.
He was a member of St. Paul Calvary United Methodist Church where he served on many boards and committees. While at Lycoming College, he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. In his younger years, Leonard enjoyed coaching youth baseball and basketball. He was a member of the Williamsport Education Association, The National Education Association, a member of the F. & A.M. Ivy Lodge #106 and the Williamsport Consistory. He was a faithful member of the Williamsport YMCA, where he and his wife would enjoy going every day. Leonard loved watching all of Penn State Athletics and was a true fan of the blue and white. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, enjoyed watching the stock market, and telling jokes, especially “bad dad” jokes.
Above all else, Leonard loved his family and cherished the time he was able to spend with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, David C. (Amy) Schanbacher of York, Gayle (Mark) McClintock, and Cheryl A. Schanbacher, both of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren, Courtney, Kyle, Danae, Taggert, and Colton; and one great-granddaughter “on the way.”
A graveside service to honor Leonard’s life will be held 2 pm, Monday, November 27 at East Point Cemetery, 125 Harer Rd., Roaring Branch.
