Jane L. Helsel, 83, of Newark, was reunited with her husband in Heaven on June 5, 2025.
Born March 23, 1942, in Wilmington, Jane was the cherished daughter of the late Angelo and Louise (Puitt) Valiante.
Jane graduated from Padua Academy in 1960 and soon after began a fulfilling career as an Administrative Assistant at DuPont, where she met the love of her life, Paul and after having her daughters she worked with Real Estate offices. Her professional achievements were paralleled by her active involvement in the Maryland, Delaware, and District of Columbia Elks Association, Newark Elks Lodge #2281, New Jersey Elks Association, Pennsylvania Elks Association, and Grand Lodge where she formed lifelong friendships and contributed to numerous charitable endeavors through Elkdom.
The heart of Jane's life was her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Paul David Helsel, with whom she shared fifty-nine years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure until his passing on October 13, 2024. Together, they raised two daughters, Diane L. Coleman (Joe) of Melbourne, FL, and Janet M. Caruccio (John) of Newark, DE, who remember her as a guiding light and a source of unwavering support. Jane's pride and joy was multiplied by her three grandchildren, Paul Joseph "PJ" Coleman, Benjamin Caruccio, and Amanda Caruccio, whose activities and accomplishments filled her with immense pride. She loved them fiercely and never missed an opportunity to brag about them. Mom-mom and Pop-pop were always by their side and their biggest cheerleaders!
Jane's love extended to her six siblings, Andrew Valiante (Wanda), Ursula Bea (Joe), Mark Valiante (Susan), Evelyn Sulecki (Steve), Louise Desmond (David) and David Valiante and her sister-in- law Karen Cook (Al), with whom she shared a special bond, and to her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will fondly remember her warmth and kindness.
Jane attended St. John-Holy Angels Parish. Her collection of angels was not just a hobby but a reflection of her belief in the goodness and guardian spirits that surround us. Jane's interests were varied and full of enthusiasm; she was an avid fan of the Phillies, Eagles, and the University of Delaware, finding joy in the camaraderie and spirit of the games.
Travel and cruising were among her favorite pastimes, often accompanied by her husband, whether for leisure or as part of Paul’s duty as an Elk. These journeys were cherished opportunities for creating memories with the love of her life surrounded by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13 at the Elks Lodge #2281, 42 Elks Trail, New Castle, DE. The family will receive friends from 10- 10:45 a.m. on Friday at the Elks Lodge. Burial was held privately in Steam Valley Cemetery, Cogan House Twp., PA.
