James Hinston Obituary

James H. Hinston, 85, of Williamsport, passed on Friday, March 28, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born February 28, 1940, he was the youngest son of Lair B. Hinston and Ruth R. (Ulmer) Hinston.
Jim was a 1958 graduate of the Williamsport High School, where he found his passion for carpentry. As a young man, Jim was an accomplished member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Explorer group at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church in Williamsport.
Jim was a carpenter at heart, if it involved building with wood you could count on him being close by. At the beginning of his career, he worked for several local contractors in the area. He eventually decided to venture out as a self-employed contractor for many years. This led him to an offered opportunity of maintenance supervisor of the general maintenance shops at Williamsport Area School District, where he retired.

Before retirement Jim built his dream woodshop where he could be found most every day working on his wood craft. Jim and the love of his life, Ann M. (Mosteller) Hinston, would enjoy traveling to craft fairs, setting up a stand and selling his carpentry creations. Jim could often be found in his yard meticulously tending to his garden, and sharing his crops with friends, family, and neighbors. Jim and Ann celebrated 65 years of marriage on January 30, 2025.
Jim is survived by his wife Ann, and sons David (Jennifer), Michael (Kimberlee), and daughter Cindy (John) Beck. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory, thirteen grand-children and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by his son Lair, daughter-in-law Lori, a great-granddaughter Ellianna, two brothers, H. George and Richard, and two sisters, Sarah Brown and Nancy Beattie.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Williamsport Home for the care Jim received. A special thanks to Kim and Ken Schick, Lia and Nate Beirly, hospice nurse Lou Knapp and Sandy Martz, who all made it possible for us to bring Jim home.

There will be a memorial service held by the family on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, 2 p.m. at Newberry Church of Christ, 2101 Linn St., Williamsport.
