H. Richard Free Obituary

H. Richard “Dick” Free, 84, of Williamsport, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at UPMC Williamsport. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Doris (Ludwig) Free.

Born on February 15, 1940, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Harry and Fern (Sheaffer) Free.

Dick was a 1958 graduate of Williamsport Area High School and was proud to have served in the United States Navy. After serving his country, he found his calling at Lonza as a member of the maintenance team, where he spent over three decades ensuring that everything ran smoothly.

Dick's dedication to his work was matched only by his involvement as a member of St. Paul-Calvary United Methodist Church. His devotion to his faith was evident in the various roles he took on within the church community, as well as his involvement with Masonic Lodge: Ivy No. 397.

As a member of the Amen Train camping group, Dick cherished the camaraderie and adventure that came with exploring the great outdoors. His passion for camping was infectious, and he often served as the heart and soul of these expeditions.

Above all else, Dick loved his family. He enjoyed preparing meals for his wife and helping her around the house. His children and grandchildren will remember him as an amazing father and patriarch.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Diane Lilley (Tom), Donald Free (Jennifer) all of Williamsport, and Darlene Hakes (Clark), of Montgomery; six grandchildren, Joshua (Julie) Lilley, Heather Lose (Kyle), Matthew and Megan Lewis, Michaela and Breanna Free; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Lauretta Baumgartner, of Cogan Station; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Dick was also preceded in death by three siblings, Arlene Levan, Robert Free, and Grace Tate.

A memorial service to honor the life of Dick will be held 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July 21 at St. Paul-Calvary United Methodist Church, 1427 Memorial Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials in Dick’s name to St. Paul Calvary United Methodist Church c/o the Dorothy Long Sunday School Class, 1427 Memorial Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701.
