H. Arthur Brummer, Jr. Obituary

H. Arthur “Art” Brummer, Jr., 93, of South Paris, Maine and formerly Muncy, passed away after a short illness on January 12, 2025.

Born in Norwood, New Jersey as the only child to Harry Arthur Brummer and Rose Brummer. Art graduated from Tenafly High School. He had a very full life always doing exactly what he set out too. Art became interested in what he called rolling wrecks as a young man. He was able to find derelict cars and bring them back to life. This would be a lifelong passion as well as other career ventures.

One of his first jobs was working as a crew member on a steam powered tugboat for New York Central. Then it was the U.S. Navy on a LST during the Korean war era. In the mid 1950’s he married and started his family. At this time, he decided that the auto junk yard business was his thing. This moved him to Hellam, PA where he operated his yard where he did just what he loved buying, selling, and parting out used cars. This business introduced him to his new interest. Restoring antique and classic cars especially his favorite the 1932 Plymouth PB Roadsters.

He sold the junk yard in the early 1970’s and moved to Muncy, PA when he met Jane Charlton. They were married and celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this month.

Art set up an auto parts manufacturing business specializing in1930’s Packard parts needed by himself and other restorers. This was a successful business for over 15 years when the next venture came along. That would be buying over ninety railroad caboose cars and a railroad yard in Renovo, PA. This occupied Art until his interest led him north to Maine where he built cabins and finally a home where he retired. But he always had a vintage car or an antique gun that he would restore back to new.

Most that knew Art will member his wonderful stories about his life and all the people he had met along the way. There was no class barrier with him as it did not matter if you were a down and out character or an important successful person you were all the same to him. In fact, most all his best friends were characters.

Predeceased by his mother and father, sons Artie Brummer, Muncy, PA. and Edward Charlton, East Hampton, NY.; and his first wife Carol Brummer (Carey).

Surviving is his wife Jane Brummer, South Paris, ME.; daughters Linda Benidict, Glen Burnie, MD., Amy Spotts (Denny) Muncy, PA., Betty Jo Snyder (Dave) and sons Chris Charlton (Heidi) South Paris, ME. and Richard DeRose, East Hampton, NY.; as well as eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

A graveside service to honor the life of Art will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 22 at Muncy Cemetery, 204 E Penn St., Muncy, PA.
