Gary Helsel Obituary

Gary E. Helsel, 81, of South Williamsport, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the Gatehouse of Divine Providence Hospital.

The heart of Gary's world was his wife and the love of his life, Linda K. (Shipman) Helsel. Married on June 26, 1971. Together, they created a life full of love and mutual respect, holding hands until the very end.

Born May 11, 1942, in Williamsport, and raised in Steam Valley, Cogan House Twp., Gary was a son of the late Ernest Helsel and Evelyn (Woodward) Golubic and shared a special bond with his step-father John Golubic.

Gary attended Liberty High School and went on to answer the call of duty with his twin brother Larry, both serving their country proudly in the US Navy on the USS Newport News during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Gary returned home to work at Helm’s Trucking, Branch Trucking, and then AVCO-Lycoming. He retired as the head of maintenance and operations director at Christina School District, Newark, DE.

Gary was a member of Pine Street United Methodist Church, and the VFW #7863 Duboistown. His love of woodworking and having his own shop in their basement was where he could be found for countless hours. Gary enjoyed the outdoors; he was an avid hunter (on Steam Valley Mountain) and fisherman. He was a fan of Penn State Football and was always ready to greet you with his signature smile and a warm embrace.

Surviving in addition to his loving wife are a brother-in-law Michael Shipman (Shary), nieces and nephews, Melinda and Matt Shipman, Shelly Helsel (Lori) and Bill Helsel, and a good family friend Ron Guisewhite.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Larry Helsel and a sister, Faye Steiner.

Funeral services to honor Gary’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St. Williamsport. Burial will follow in Steam Valley Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County. A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Sanders.
