Elizabeth A. “Betty” Mapes, 72, of South Williamsport, died Tuesday November 5, 2024.
Born November 21, 1951 in St. Mary’s, she was a daughter of Othmar and Regina (Hassenetter) Distler.
Betty graduated from Elk County Christian High School and received a degree in sociology from Lock Haven University. For over 34 years, she worked as a unit supervisor at North Penn Comprehensive Work Services.
She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and also volunteered as an election poll worker. She loved following the local sports teams, and was a fan of Penn State and the Philadelphia Eagles. Above all else, Betty’s greatest love was her family and being a “Gramie”.
Surviving are two children, Christine E. Barto (Kody) of Las Vegas and Matthew A. Mapes (Bridget) of Moscow, PA; six grandchildren, Kaitlyn Loraditch (Andrew), Hunter and Kayla Barto, and Braeden, Kellen, and Mary Mapes; her partner and best friend of over 25 years, Stephen M. Mitchell with whom she lived in South Williamsport; her brother, David Distler (Connie) of Dubois as well as several close nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Heindl and Jane Mack.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, November 9 at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 702 West Fourth St. Williamsport. A time of visitation will be held from 9:00 - 9:45 am Saturday at church.
