Dr. Steven Sands Obituary

Dr. Steven K. Sands, known affectionately as Steve to his friends and family, passed away on April 23, 2025, at UPMC of Williamsport, at the age of 80. Born on February 9, 1945, in Rockford, IL, Steve was a man of boundless optimism and adventure whose life journey was as varied as it was fulfilling.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Judy A. (Morgan) Sands, his devoted children, Lorna Sands and Thomas Sands (Laura), and his adored grandchildren, Hannalyn Schwarzer, Austin Schwarzer, Morgan Sands, Miles Sands, and Jane Sands. His legacy also lives on through his brother, James Sands, Jr. (Jan), his sisters, Saralie Terens (Randolph) and Susan Talt (Brad). Steve was preceded in death by his parents, James H. Sands and Doreen M. (Perks) Sands, and his sister, Stacey Stout.

Steve's educational journey was marked by an insatiable thirst for knowledge. After graduating from Pompano Beach High School in Florida, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Bradley University and Master’s Degree at University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Not stopping there, Steve pursued and obtained a Doctorate Degree in Business from Strayer University, followed by another Doctorate from Argosy University.

A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Steve's career began in the family business, Eclipse Burners in Rockford, IL. His professional endeavors took him across the globe, living in England and Calgary, Alberta, before settling in Williamsport, where he became the operations manager at Keeler Boiler. Steve's passion for education led him to become Chairman of the Business Administration Department at Central Penn College, where he also developed a Study Abroad Program and a BA Program for Business, enriching the lives of countless students with his experience and wisdom.

Steve's zest for life was evident in his many pursuits. An Olympic alternate for swimming and a semi-professional football player for The Rockford Rams, he embodied the spirit of competition and the joy of sportsmanship. A long-time member of Northway Community Church, Steve's faith was a cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through life's trials and triumphs.

An adventurer at heart, Steve's hobbies were as diverse as his professional accomplishments. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan and reveled in the freedom of boating, the thrill of riding motorcycles, and the art of storytelling. He was an avid traveler, exploring both domestic and international destinations, and cherished the vacations he spent in the U.S. with his family. Steve was also a dedicated coach to his children and grandchildren, serving as their most enthusiastic cheerleader and an eternal optimist who inspired them to reach for the stars.

Described by those who knew him best as adventurous, optimistic, and intelligent, Steve Sands lived a life that was rich in experiences and love. His stories, filled with humor and wisdom, will continue to resonate with all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
