David Shaffer Obituary

David E. Shaffer, 82, of South Williamsport, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Valley View Nursing Center.

He was the beloved husband of Lura A. (Shumway) Shaffer with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.

Born April 18, 1943 in Williamsport, David was the son of the late Charles and Genevieve (Newcomer) Shaffer.

He worked as a professional driver for himself and for multiple area businesses. He loved showing his family the places he cherished around the state.

A devoted Boston Red Sox enthusiast and an avid supporter of Penn State football, Dave followed his teams with unwavering loyalty. Whether in a motor home at Beaver Stadium for every home game or on the road for an away matchup, his spirit and enthusiasm were unmistakable.

He enjoyed country music all of his life and in recent years loved bluegrass tunes as well.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Shaffer is survived by his children, Julie Williams (Tom) of North Carolina, Scott Shaffer (Dawn) and Todd Shaffer (Alycia), all of South Williamsport; eight grandchildren, Johnathan Williams, Max and Lewis Shaffer, Riley and Caitlyn Shaffer, Bronwyn and Emily Shaffer, and Emily Burrows (Travis); four great grandchildren; and sister, Gail Woodring (Henry) of Rauchtown.

He was preceded in death by a son, Craig Shaffer, and brothers, Donald and Gary Shaffer.

At Dave’s request, services will be handled privately for the family.

Donations in David’s memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
