David C. Frey

      David C. Frey, 75, of Williamsport, affectionately known as Dave to his friends and family, passed away on November 6, 2024.

     Born on April 26, 1949, in Williamsport, Dave was the son of the late Charles and Virginia (Whitman) Frey. His father co-owned the Knittle & Frey Feed Mill.  Dave spent much of his childhood at the mill, where he learned the values of hard work and community.

     A proud graduate of Williamsport High School, Class of 1967, Dave went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Lycoming College in 1971, followed by his master's degree. He dedicated his career to education, spending more than three decades as a math teacher at his high school alma mater, where he inspired generations of students with his passion for learning. Dave retired from teaching in 2002, having touched the lives of countless young minds.

     In addition to his teaching career, Dave served as Tax Collector for Old Lycoming Township for 36 years, demonstrating the same sense of duty and integrity in his civic role as he did in all aspects of his life. He was also a dedicated volunteer, giving his time to numerous organizations. One of his most cherished volunteer activities was reading for the blind, a cause he felt deeply connected to. Dave also performed in the local Reader’s Theater, served on the Board of the Williamsport Teachers Credit Union and was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he shared his time and talents with his church friends.

      Dave’s genuine warmth, quick wit, and ability to strike up a conversation with anyone were among his most beloved qualities. He had a brilliant mind, but an even bigger heart, making him a friend to all who knew him. Whether sharing a joke or a thoughtful conversation, Dave had a gift for making people feel at ease. He was also a passionate collector of oddities, and his quirky finds often became treasured gifts for his family and friends.

     Above all, Dave was a devoted husband and father. He married his wife, Doreen (Dieffenderfer) Frey, on June 30, 1973, and together they built a life rich with love, laughter, and shared adventures. His sons, Christian Frey (Michele) of Williamsport and Eric Frey (Emily) of Virginia, were the pride and joy of his life, and he zealously supported them in all their endeavors. Dave will be deeply missed by his brother, Dennis Frey (Shelley), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He also cherished his beloved dog, Axel, and the joy brought to his life by his many grand-dogs.

     A memorial service to celebrate Dave’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at First Church, 604 Market St., Williamsport.  The family will be available for visitation prior to the service, from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM and after the service, at which time light refreshments will be available.  Online condolences may be expressed on Dave’s memorial page at www.SandersMortuary.com.

     Dave’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy of kindness, humor, and service will never be forgotten.
