Charles F. Sheets, 90, of Trout Run, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2024 surrounded by family. Surviving is his loving wife of 54 years, Gail L. (Smith) Sheets, whom he married on New Year’s Eve of 1969.
Born December 6, 1933, in Salladasburg, he was a son of the late George and Amanda (Edwards) Sheets.
Charlie was a man of honor and courage, having served as a United States Marine during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. After his military service, Charlie was a dedicated employee at Weldons and Stroehmanns for 20 years and spent another 20 years at the former Bethlehem Steel (Wire Rope Works), before retiring.
An active member of his community, Charlie found happiness in service and social engagement.
His commitment to his fellow servicemen extended well beyond his years in active duty, as he took great pride in his role as Commander of the Korean War Veterans Honor Guard and was an active participant in the Marine Corp League. Perhaps one of Charlie’s most heartfelt contributions was his involvement with the military honors these groups provide. This role allowed him to give back to those who, like him, had sacrificed for their country, ensuring their service was honored and remembered.
He was a member of the Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company, where he often spent mornings sipping coffee and enjoying conversations. He was a faithful member of Trout Run United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee. Charlie served as President of the Lone Spring Hunting Club, and he was an enthusiastic member of the Trout Run Tractor Pulls Association.
His love of tractors, playing cards, hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time at the cabin were more than hobbies; they were avenues through which he formed lasting friendships.
Above all else, he treasured the time spent at family gatherings, sharing stories, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations to come. His laughter was infectious, and his presence brought comfort and joy to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Surviving in addition to his wife are seven children, Charlene Easterly (Robert) of NY, Sandy Barrett (Ron) of Montoursville, Michele Morean (Donnie) of Trout Run, Scott Sheets (Bridget) of Trout Run, Beth Getgen (Bart) of Linden, Tammy Briggs (Mark) of Montoursville and Kathie Sheets of VA; 13 grandchildren, Jamie Alfano (Kevin), Todd Easterly, Noah Barrett (Kelsey), Michael Morean, Ryan Morean (Bryanna), Mckenzie Morean, Rachelle Sheets, Jack Sheets, Amanda Davisson (Michael), Matthew Getgen (Nina), Cody Briggs, Richard Packer III, and Patrick Nienhueser; 11 great- grandchildren; three siblings, Harry Sheets (Shirley) of NY, Nancy Greenaway (John) of Jersey Shore, and Mike Sheets of KY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Emily Olson, Donna Lee Duel, George “Butch” Sheets, Alice Bay, and Mary Lou Straub.
A memorial service to honor Charlie’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, November 7 at St John's-Newberry United Methodist Church, 2101 Newberry Street, Williamsport with full military honors. Burial will be private in Trout Run Cemetery. A viewing will be held 5 – 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 6 at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond Street, Williamsport.
