Bill Starr Obituary

Bill Starr Obituary

William Michael “Bill” Starr, 66, of Trout Run, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at his home, with his wife at his side.

Together since 2014, he was the beloved husband of Karen Ludwig Starr.

Born June 20, 1959 in Williamsport, Bill was the son of the late Byron B. and Theresa E. (Ross) Starr.

Bill attended Williamsport Area High School and left high school in his senior year to join the U.S. Navy at 17 years old. It was there that he obtained his High School Diploma. He served his country in the Navy for three years, then the CB reserves for eight years.

Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in the Williamsport Area Community College, now Penn College, where he made the Deans List every semester and graduated in 1982.

Bill was recruited by Caterpillar Equipment as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and worked for eight years at Modern Handling. He furthered his education and experience in Harrisburg from 2004 to 2007, earning the position of Journeyman in the Laborers Union.

Following that, he worked for Walbridge Construction as a Skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic. In January 2007, Bill suffered a life-threatening injury on the job. He survived the injury but was disabled after that.

Bill was a devoted fan of Penn State football and the Philadelphia Eagles, but what he treasured most were his mornings spent on the patio with his wife and a cup of coffee.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature and found peace in the open air. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, and boating, and was especially fond of riding his motorcycle and dirt bikes.

Bill was a natural problem-solver and a master tinkerer, always ready to lend a hand or figure out how to fix just about anything. Though he sometimes appeared rough around the edges, that exterior was only a façade. In truth, Bill had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor. He was well known for his practical jokes. Those who knew him best experienced his playful spirit and moments, like the eagle in the Christmas tree, are now part of the many stories shared about him.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his son, Jason Starr (Trish) of Allenwood; grandsons, Liam and Dylan Starr; siblings, Janet (David) Derr of New Smyrna Beach, FL; Kathy Myers of Linden; Mary Bendock (Charlie) of Laceyville; David Starr of Easton; Susan Keller (Jay) of Catawissa; Theresa Snyder (Gregg) of Williamsport; Byron Starr (Becki) of Harrisburg; Carol Brophy (Mark) of Wellsville, NY; Barbara Niklaus (Rik) of Williamsport; and JoAnn Carbaugh (John) of Carlisle; Shawn Starr (Joe) of Williamsport; step-sister, Angela Garner of Williamsport; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant brother, Jeffrey Starr.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Compassus Hospice for the dignity and respect shown in Bill’s care, with special thanks to Mike M. and Jess.

A service to honor the life of Bill will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at 2 pm at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond Street, Williamsport, where Military Honors will be rendered following his service. Relatives and friends will be received from 1 pm until the time of the service at Sanders.
