Roderick Leon O’Bryan, 82, a highly respected Vietnam Veteran and beloved member of his community, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Margaret Ann O’Bryan on May 11, 2018.

Born March 24, 1942 in Corning, NY he was the son of Ralph Leon and Ardis Irene (Albee) O’Bryan.

Roderick's journey began on a dairy farm, where the values of hard work and dedication were instilled in him from a young age. Rod had a lot of musical talent that started during his early years and developed throughout his life, studying opera, singing and playing multiple musical instruments. He graduated from Elkland High School and attended Williamsport Technical Institute pursuing his interest as a master automotive technician.

Roderick proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he was awarded four Purple Hearts as a wounded combat veteran. Throughout his life, the skills he learned in his early adult years were evident in his 38 years of distinguished service in the United States Army. Retiring on his birthday in 2002, he achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 and the esteemed position of 1st Sergeant. His military career was marked by unwavering commitment and exemplary leadership, qualities that earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and family. Standing by his side through deployments, reenlistments, and daily service was his admirable wife, Margie.

Beyond his military achievements, Roderick was a devoted member of the American Legion Post #1, Williamsport where he served as the past commander. His dedication to his fellow veterans was unwavering, and he took great pride in his role as a life member of the National VFW. Roderick's service to his country and his comrades was a testament to his selfless nature and his desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Rod would do anything for anyone, never saying no.

Roderick's love for the great outdoors was a defining characteristic of his life. Having lived all over the country, he held a special fondness for the rugged beauty of Montana. An avid outdoorsman and expert marksman, he cherished time spent hunting and fishing, embracing the tranquility and challenge that nature provided. His passion for the outdoors was matched by his enthusiasm for traveling and camping, activities that allowed him to explore and appreciate the diverse landscapes of America. He and his wife explored together, enjoying Native American Heritage and Culture.

His skills as a craftsman were evident in his ability to restore oil lamps and cast-iron cookware, a hobby that combined his love for history with his talent for working with his hands. He especially loved tinkering with his 1992 Pontiac Grand Am. Roderick's resourcefulness and creativity shown through in these restorations, each piece a reflection of his meticulous care and attention to detail.

Rod had a sense of humor, love for life and love for his family. He was always willing to lend a hand or help them when they were in need. He took great pleasure in helping his son Sean, enjoying the opportunity to work alongside him at O’Bryan Dry Wall.
