Leon Ertel Obituary

Leon S. Ertel, 90, of Williamsport, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at ManorCare Jersey Shore.
Born May 26, 1927, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Albert K. and Sarah E. (Schlee) Ertel. Leon married Bessie A. (Marshall) Ertel on Nov. 28, 1946, and together they shared 71 years of marriage.
Leon served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned home and continued living a life showing his patriotism, always proud to stand by the red, white, and blue.
He was a self-employed truck driver for many years and later retired from Providence Ventures as an equipment handler and truck driver for Divine Providence Hospital.
A lifelong member of Seventh Day Adventist Church, Leon was very involved as a Deacon, Pathfinder leader, and Sabbath school teacher. One of his greatest past times was being on the water. He loved taking his boat to the New York State lakes where you could find him fishing and spending time outdoors. Leon enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in his back yard and always cherished family vacations spent in Canada.
Leon always had a story to tell and could take over a crowd in any room by telling a joke. His larger than life personality will be greatly missed, just as much as he’ll miss indulging in a bowl of chocolate ice cream.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, David A. (Betsy) Ertel, of Apopka, Fla. and Diane S. (Thomas) Fulmer, of Williamsport; five grandchildren, Christine D. Ertel, Kimberly J. Ertel, both of Apopka, Fla., David A. Ertel II, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jeffrey T. (April) Fulmer, of Williamsport and Trevor A. Fulmer (Jim Mattus), of Boston, Mass.; five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Harrison, Sophia, Waverly, and Arabella; a brother, John A. (Chris) Ertel, of Jersey Shore; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leon was preceded in death by a son, Maurice L. Ertel and a sister, Dorothy Ertel.
A funeral service to honor the life of Leon will be held at noon Friday, March 30 at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 201 Market St., South Williamsport, with Pastor Anthony Crawford, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodward Twp. Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at church.
Memorial contributions in Leon’s name may be made to Seventh Day Adventist Church, 201 Market St., South Williamsport, PA 17702.
