Jack Bender Obituary

Jack O. Bender, 94, of Litchfield, N.H., formerly of Loyalsock Twp., died Sunday Feb. 11, 2018, in his home surrounded by his family.  
He was born in Williamsport on Oct. 31, 1923, a son of the late OE and Mildred (Graham) Bender Jr.  
Mr. Bender graduated from South Williamsport High School, serving as the 1941 Class Vice President, and lived most of his life in Loyalsock Township, where he served as a township auditor for many years. He had been a resident of Litchfield, N.H. for the past five years. 
He was a U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran in World War II serving in the South Pacific with the 13th "Jungle" Battalion.  
Mr. Bender had been employed as a meat cutter and clerk for over 45 years at the former Eders Market in Montoursville, (now Rupert’s). He was a member of the Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church and had served as Church treasurer. An 11 Gallon member of the American Red Cross, he also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program of Lycoming County, and loved gardening.     
He is survived by daughter, Gail Battaglia and her husband David of Litchfield; his grandson, Giovanni F. Battaglia, of Litchfield; and his brother, Joseph L. Bender and his wife Lois, of South Williamsport.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Shirley (Harrison) Bender in January of 2011. 
Calling hours will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, February 18 at Sanders Mortuary,  821 Diamond St., Williamsport. A funeral service to honor Jack’s life will be held 12 noon Monday, February 19 at Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church, 1301 Clayton Ave., Williamsport. Burial will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy, with military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County.
